Why the Darkness?

Why the Darkness?

It’s often said that one of the hardest questions to answer is as to why there is so much evil in the world.

But when we use the Bible as our reference point it’s not so very complex at all.

When God originally created the world the Bible tells us that it was good. Only when humanity overstepped the boundaries which God had set for their welfare did sin, and therefore evil, enter into the human experience.

Prior to that fear, death, sickness, violence and deprivation didn’t exist.

The Bible tells us that mankind, made in God’s image, were entrusted with being stewards of his wonderful creation. We were his delegated representatives on the earth. What a privilege. What a responsibility.

In submitting to the devil’s deception to disobey God, mankind forfeited their right to rule and reign, and thus yielded stewardship of the world to the devil.

That might be considered a fanciful story if you don’t believe the Bible but the fact remains that evil is still very much in evidence.

An alternative root cause for evil might be proposed but that still leaves us with this terrible dilemma; how do we get rid of the darkness?

Fortunately for us, in a world where so many are perplexed and increasingly fearful, the Bible has the answer.

It is found in the person of Jesus Christ.

Much has been recorded about Jesus but the chief purpose of his life on earth was to reconcile humanity to their Creator by taking the punishment for our sin. What amazing love he has for us. What unparalleled mercy he displays.

‘God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.’ John 3:16

When we receive Jesus as our Saviour and Lord we, in effect, reject the darkness and welcome the light. God’s light and life.

The solution to driving back the darkness is initiated by inviting the light of heaven into our lives.

As light-bearers of Jesus Christ, his life then flows through us, bringing hope, joy, healing, reconciliation and peace into the lives of others.

In a world of fear and darkness we all need some good news and Jesus is the best news going.

If you’ve not invited Jesus into your life and you want to know and experience the person who the Bible called ‘the Light of the world‘ I’d love you to join me in praying this short prayer.

‘God, thank you for sending your Son Jesus into this world to rescue me from the power of evil.

I now turn my back on any way in which I have partnered with the darkness and welcome you into my life as my Saviour and Lord.

Please fill me with your Holy Spirit so that I can experience your light and your life and so that I can shine brightly for you.

Amen.’
